  • Short and Long Term Disability through an employer
  • Posted: 2008-03-20 18:49:19 By Christy P
  • Hello All,
I've read about the process many of you have gone through applying for SSDI but has anyone applied for short or long term disability through their employers insurance (with a private insurance company like Unum or someone like that) and if so what was that process like for you?

I am starting it now and wondering what I'm in for.

    Thanks,
    Christy

  • Christy,

I have not started the process of going on disability insurance yet, been hoping to hold off for a year to a year and a half. Do you pay for your disability insurance or is it provided to you by your company? Once you complete the process could you send me an email to let me know how it went. What to do and what not to do.

    Thanks,
    Dave

  • Hi Dave,
I have gone through the first part of the process and my short term disability was approved the first time. My company's short term disability lasts for 6 months and then transitions to long term disability so that will be my next process to go through.

I think one of the thing that helped is that in addition to the regular form the insurance company asked my Dr. to complete he sent a letter detailing the difficulities I was having.

    Good luck to you.

  • Christy,

Thank you for keeping me informed. I believe that my company is 6 or 8 weeks short term then it goes into long term for one year. I also believe that our company will terminated you after that point so they do not have to pay any benefits.

I am glad it is going smooth for you so far. Again keep me informed on you progress.

    Thanks.
    Dave

  • Hi Christy,

It has been just about a year ago from when you applied for disability (LTD). So how have you made out so far? I hope everthing has been going smoothly.

Can you tell me what was the process for you. You said that you were on the computer most of the day, so were you getting eye strain headaches? Did you give your employer any advance waring or did you just decide one day to just stop working or did you start taking off days?

I hope to hear from you and thanks,
    Dave

  • Chrisy,

I went through the process about 1 1/2 years ago. It was not as bad as I thought it would be. A lot of forms to fill out. The real key for me was that my Retina Specialist was very supportive and on the forms he filled out he stated that the disablility is permament and does prevent me from working. One of the stipulations on my disability polocy is that I had to file for SSDI, however the insurance company paid for the lawyler to file and I was approved the first time. The disbility benefit was reduced by the amount that SSDI paid. It all worked out well.

  • Thanks Larry,
If you don't mind me asking, what was your visual field and accuity and what type of work did you do? I currently have about 20 degrees in my right eye but due to CME only 20/400 accuity (with glasses). I have about 15 degrees in my left eye and 20/50 accuity with glasses. My work has me at a computer most of the day.

I know my disability company will be looking at my job description to make their determination based on the work I do.

    Thanks,
    Christy

  • Christy,

I had about 20 degrees visual field at the time, but what did it was the CME. My vision in the left eye was 20/80 and the right was 20/70. I live in Texas whose laws say with that vision I am restricted to daylight driving (I wouldn't drive at night anyway) with a maximum speed of 45 MPH. Since my job for the last 30 years was outside sales, I could no longer perform the duties of my job.

For you I would think since your visual field is equal to or less than 20 degrees that makes you "legally blind" and therefore, I believe on that basis have to award you disability.

    Hope this answers your questions.

    Regards,
    Larry
