  • My daughter has RP, today she went to the ophtomotrist and was told she has ERM. Is there any conneciton between the RP and the ERM . Her appointment with the ophtamologist is not until the 7th of next month, does any one have any info about ERM?

  • Debbie,

I have an epiretinal membrane and so I know what kind of symptoms your daughter has. An ERM is a scar-tissuelike membrane that forms over the macula. Depending on the severity, it causes central blurring and distortion. It is not necessarily from the RP as older people sometimes get this when there is just traction on the retina from a PVD (posterior vitreous detachment). Doctors usually don't want to do a membranectomy (to peel the ERM) unless vision is substantially affected in the 20/100 area. It is a very delicate surgery. It is also associated with retinal vascular diseases or previous ocular surgery. Hopefully your daughter is only mildly affected and does not have too much distortion is her vision. :) Hope this helps a little and good luck with her appointment. Keep us posted on the results.

  • Hi Reyne,
Well thanks, believe it or not you gave me a clearer notion on ERM. I will surely keep you posted. Thanks for taking the time.
