  • RP Docs in NY area
  • Posted: 2008-02-27 13:26:19 By Michael F
  • Hi everyone,
I was diagnosed with CME secondary to RP over a year ago and have seen no improvement in my vision with Diamox (the cysts disappeared, then quickly came back). My long-time RP doctor (over 12 years) is on the conservative side (which I like), but I am thinking of getting a second opinion since the Diamox seems not to be working. Can anyone recommed an RP doctor they are happy with in the NYC area. Thanks for your help.

  • It sounds like you may not be able to "cure" from CME. Many people have chronic cases like yours and thus, would be treated with continued use of Diamox. CME, comes and goes, in patients with RP, often. No one knows why this is the case. But I am willing to place bets that if you went to another doctor they would agree with your current provider. The key is to control the CME, which Diamox is doing, so I'm not sure why you state it is not working. CME will come and go on its own from what I have understood reading and learning from others.

Besides, there are some studies to show that Diamox has some positive impact on RP. I know another RPer whose doc kept her on Diamox even though she has no CME due to it improving circulation of the blood in the eyes. That is vital for RP since we often have poor blood circulation and develop vessel attenuation.
