  • Abreviations ???
  • Posted: 2008-02-26 13:42:43 By Vicki T
  • I have been reading a lot of past posts on here and I'm not sure what all the abbreviations used on here actually stand for. (ERG, etc.) Would someone please help me out here? I realize it makes typing your messages quicker but some us may not have a clue what you're referring to. I'm sure, if you are reading this, Daran Z, you could give us a short list which could enlighten many of us readers. Your knowledge of "RP" has been like a fountain of information for me. Thank you very much!

  • Vicki,

It is easy to find out what the abbreviations stand for if you google the letters with the word retina right next to it! For example: "ERG retina" would come up Electroretinogram---a test for retinal response to light. This is the test to detect RP (hope you know that abbreviation ). Another one used here a lot is CME---cystoid macular edema. VA is visual acuity and BCVA is best corrected visual acuity.
ERM--Epiretinal membrane which is scar tissue causing distortion in vision. Try and google the initals. As you read every day it will be second nature to you. Happy Reading!!!

  • Reyne is the smart one around here. :)

Let's see, VF is Visual Field. ADRP is autosomal dominant RP, ARRP would be Autosomal Recessive RP and XLRP would be X-linked RP.

What other abbreviations do you see around here?

  • Reyne,

I didn't think of the way you suggested to Google to find an answer to abbreviations. I don't think I would have come up with that one. It was a great idea too!

But honestly, I don't consider myself "smart." I just know a little bit about things in one aspect, and others know more about another aspect, so we learn together.
