  • Sunglasses for RP
  • Posted: 2008-02-19 19:24:15 By Madison D
  • I am overwhelmed by the wonderful response from all of those who have taken time to care. I haved a new question. My 12 year old,who has RP for 3 years that we know of, wears sunglasses when she is outside, her reading glasses are slightly tented, she wears a hat in the summer along with sunglasses. What kind of sunglasses should be look for ( she constantly breaks or looses these) and should she wear the sunglasses when in very well lighted rooms?( basketball arena, church auditorium,etc..Thanks again. Please accept our thanks ahead of time. Jan (Madison's mom)

  • Find a good wrap around pair that blocks out light from all angles. I prefer to have one pair that is really dark for when I'm outside and the sun is bright and another pair that is lightly tinted for cloudy days and bright indoor areas.

Of course, it's kind of a pain in the butt to have to carry around 2 pairs of glasses, along with all the usual junk.

Oh yeah, you women have those bottomless purses you always carry. I need to get me one of those. lol

I would like to find a good pair of glasses that has a lightly tinted, fixed lens with a well-fitting additional flip-down lens that would allow for stronger tint. That would probably be most convenient, at least for me.

As far as I'm concerned, the greatest value sunglasses have is being able to spare what little low-light vision that you have, so that you can take the glasses off when you walk into a building and actually be able to see something. If I walk into a typically lit building on a bright sunny day, then I sometimes have to stand there at the door for minute just so I can see ANYTHING.

So as you can imagine, using the right sunglasses to be well prepared for changing light conditions can make a huge difference in daily activities for an person with RP.

  • Jan,

NoIR and Corning are the two main companies that most RPers buy from. Some can be written into an Rx.

I agree with Jonathan's recommendation with a decent wrap around. What you might try to do is contact a Low Vision Specialist where she can try some of these on. You may be able to get the state agency that services blind adults to send someone to try Corning lenses.

But each filter works different for others. Many wills ay that the Amber filter works best for RP, it cuts out the harmful stuff but yet, permits enough for one to see well. I do not benefit from Amber and require the really really dark ones when I am outside. I am now extremely sensitive to sunlight (as opposed to years ago...)

But I'd suggest finding a Low Vision Specialist or talking to her ophthalmologist/Retina Specialist to see what they recommend and where to go.

  • My 8 year old with RP/LCA loves his NOIR glasses. He uses the big non-fitover ones that have side lights that are tinted like the big sunglass lenses. Maybe not the coolest, but they work and he likes them so I'm not going to argue

  • Thanks for your input. I will use this when talking to Madison about the glasses. Style isn't always what's the most effective. jan
