- Dear Colleagues:
I want to know if you have a good experience with this 2 products: Lutein and DHA.
What is the correct dosage of use?
Can I take this products for a long period of time?
Do you know other products recommended for RP (homeopathy or natural products)?
Im 61 years old.
Thanks...

- My son has been on a vitamin regimen for 7 years under supervision of his doctor. He takes 25,000 IU of Beta Carotene, 400 mg DHA, 6mg Lutien daily and 50mg Zinc twice weekly. His last check up in December showed very little peripheral or central degeneration. Whether this is due to the vitamins or not we do not know. However with the Beta Carotene you do not have the negative effects of Vitamin A. If it has any chance of helping we are continuing the vitamins.

- Jorge,
Both DHA and Lutein are beneficial to those who do not have RP as well. I have been recommended by my doctor to take 500 to 1000mg of DHA and 20mg of Lutein a day.

- My son is now 18. His doctor who at the time was Heckenlively at UCLA did the first recommendation. He also had recommended Vitamin E but my research found Vitamin E is detrimental for anyone with RP. His new doctor recommended the current Beta Carotene, Lutien, DHA and zinc.

- At what age was he diagnosed with RP? I have a 5 year old son with RP, just diagnosed. There is nothing I can do at this time since he is to little for anything.

- My son was 10 years old and both his mother and grandmother have RP. He started the vitamins at ten. I would advise your doctor recommend any vitamins. Our doctor is Dr Janet "Jill" Hopkins and is wonderful, very involved with FFB and RP.
She is at LA Retina. http://laretina.com/Newweb/RVExternal/all_about_us.htm
Bets of luck and my prayers are wth you.

- Peter, I'm curious, but don't want to seem nosy, either! Do your wife and mother-in-law have dominant RP or are they effected carriers of X-linked RP? I think the "carrier" label is misleading as everyone carrying X-linked genes actually has the condition, but in women, it can be so mild as to be almost undetectable. I say all this as we have X-linked cone-rod dystrophy ( "inverse RP") and there is a DNA test for our gene that can detect if a female has the effected X, so she can know if her offspring run the risk or not. This test was actually made from my brother's blood sample, and a 4th cousin just learned he has the exact same gene ( of course, he would). I think it's easiest to make a test on the X chromosome as it's the only one you have to check, vs. 22 other autosome pairs. If your family's is X-linked, why couldn't a test be made for yours? You may have daughters who would want to know if they carry it, or other relatives. Carol
