  • Hi, has anyone had corrective eye surgery? i have RP, very little peripheral vision, but my central vision is good with glasses or contacts. Wondering if corrective eye surgery would do any good? Anybody have any input?

  • My son's central vision is very good with contacts vs glasses. His doctor recommended NOT to have Lasik as any surgery has some risk. We do not want to risk any additional problems.

  • Hi Tim,

I had the lasik surgery apprx 9 yrs ago when I was around 32.

It is great. I have always been happy that I did it but it was a tough personal decision that I weighed carefully. I went with TLC because I felt they had the best reputation at the time and a lot of experience.

Google LASIK and RP and you will see the yeahs and nays about it. My biggest complaint was dry eyes for about 6 months but it was managable with eye drops. Otherwise, I had no RP related issues that I am aware.

  • did it help your side vision any?

  • No it did not and can not help peripheral. RP affects the retina; lasik corrects the lens/cornea.

The best lasik can do is correct your vision as well as your contacts or glasses would. That’s the best it can do and sometimes not even that much.

Do your research before making that choice. There are risks such as halos, eye infections, etc.

    Take care,

  • Tim,

I agree with Peter. The LASIK can be a disaster for people with RP. And many doctors who know you have RP may not be willing to do LASIK.

It also may not do you any good because RP can affect the cones which in turn is what your Central Vision is. So as RP progresses, you will likely need to wear glasses if they affect the cones. No LASIK will ever correct that since that just corrects the lens and cornea as Anna Marie stated.

  • I don't know of a lasik doctor who woujld operate on an RP patient. The ones I spoke to were not willing to take any chances with my remaining vision.

  • The only way I would get LASIK if you developed cataracts. My brother developed them and had to get it done. I am now getting them, so i will eventually have to get it done. That's probably the only way a doctor would recommend it.
