  • SSDI and work
  • Posted: 2008-02-05 18:58:44 By John T
  • I realize each state is different but can anyone tell me the rules for SSDI in your state. About how much does a person receive in SSDI eevery month and how much money can you make if you continue to work? I'll be moving to MN and might have to go this route for the first time.
    thanks,
    John

  • i am from pa you have to be legally blind. iget ssdi. you get what your social security would be at 65. i think you can make aroud 1400,00 a month with ssdi. it takes about 3 to 6months. social security will send you forms then you have to send all thatin then they will send you to their doctor. you should contact social security or go online. always go to the source. sometimes word of mouth will cause alot of aggravation. good luck

  • John,

SSDI is a Federal program, so there are no state rules involved. How much you can draw on SSDI depends upon how much you put into the SS system. You should get an annual SSA statment telling you if you retired today how much you will get. That is about what you will get with SSDI. You do not need to be Legally Blind (or Statutory Blind on SSA definition) to get SSDI, although it helps alot.

But if you are currently working and tryign to get SSDI, you'd likely be denied because you have "gainful employment." The rules for working and SSDI are for those who are currently on SSDI and trying to get back into the workforce.

If you are legally blind, you can earn up to $1580/month for the year 2008 and still keep your SSDI benefits. If you are not classified as legally blind (or Statutory Blindness by SSA) then you can only earn about $750/month and keep your benefits. That is the only rule that legal blindness comes into play and your ability to earn more while working and collecting SSDI.
