- Colors and The Weather
- Posted: 2008-02-01 21:36:18 By Michelle W
- Is an inability to tell whether the sky is blue or cloudy related to a retina difficulty? Our daugther can not tell what color the sky is most of the time and often mistakes darker clouds for blue sky. Recently, she has also been having trouble telling the difference between blue and purple and red and pink. She also has trouble with blue/green. She has the most trouble telling colors on clothing. I haven't noticed the same thing with crayons and such.
She recently did poorly on the cone adaptation test and tonight she did not see that I was handing her an object when we were in the van at night. So it appears she does have night blindness but apparently more tests need to be done.
Thanks!

- Yes. On an overcast day, I don't confuse it with a bright blue sky, but I can't tell sometimes where the grey sky starts and the clouds end, etc. I often can't tell brown/purple or blue/green or pink/yellow on many occasions when the color shades are just too close. Also can't see yellow highlighter. Sometimes holding up a contrast color next to the color in question helps, but not all the time.

- Natalie,
Thanks for your reply. In a way, I really didn't want to hear that... Looks like we'll have to find out what's happening with this child's vision. Its hard to believe she might have something else going on other than her cerbral/cortical vision impairment.

- I wouldn't translate my experience into an automatic correlation with what your child is experiencing. There can be different conditions that have the same symptoms. For example my diminished acuity could account for the problems distinguishing sky and clouds and my acuity problems stem from being near-sighted and a strong astigmatism--not related to RP. The color problem, however, is RP related. I just wanted to answer your question that, yes, there are others with similar symptoms to what your described. Whatever diagnosis your child receives they are lucky to have a great parent like yourself looking out for them.

- Natalie,
Thanks for your reply. Our daughter has normal acuity so why her color vision is variable is a mystery. She has been referred for an ERG because her functional visual fields are too variable (from her CVI). So we'll see.
