- SSDI eligibility
- Posted: 2008-01-25 12:50:07 By Tab V
- I have a question regarding SSDI for a 4 yr old that was recently diagnosed with RP. Does he have to be considered legally blind in order to qualify for benefits or will the condition itself qualify him? Any info anyone has would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

- Are you referring to SSI and not SSDI? Because a 4 yr old wouldn't qualify for SSDI since he/she hasn't worked and put any credit into the system to get anything.
But if you are trying to get any benefit for him/her, SSI is probably what you are thinking of. However, that is a "needs based" program and if yours or his father's income exceeds the limit, then no, he won't qualify.
But as for a disability determination, you don't have to be totally blind. They do have visual disturbances. I qualified for SSI when I was a teen/early 20's going to college but mostly got it due to being deaf and not the RP. I saw quite well.
