  • Elections and Stem Cells
  • Posted: 2008-01-19 16:30:42 By brian n
  • Keep in mind, this is a very important election year. Upon recent investigation, Obama appears to be a staunch advocate of Government funded stem-cell research. In fact, he helped draft the bill that would have significantly expanded the cell lines that qualify for government funding. Unfortunately, our benevolent President vetoed. I know there are alot of serious issues (e.g., the war, economy, immigration) but this is a serious issue for those of us who frequent this website.

  • You've just opened up a can of worms. While stem cell may be important for us, it isn't the most important factor facing our country, particularly the development of an NAU (North America Union) which ultimately, we as a people WILL LOSE OUR VOICE as stated by the Constitution. Losing our soverignty is upmost important.

I would rather be deaf and blind and live FREE than be sighted and live in bondage.

  • Hi Brien. I'm agree with you. Although we have serious problems in our country, I think that Stem Cells have a big promise no just for people with RP condition, but also for people with many others degeneratives illness. I think that scientics have been doing a very important job and I know that foundations like this (Fighting Blindness), will continue working not just for us, but for our children have a better life.
If I lost my vision, it's ok. but if there is something that can prevent blindness for my children, WELCOME!
    Martha.

  • Stem cells aren't the end all, be all. Interesting to note, researchers just found a way to convert adult stem cells to a state akin to embryonic, so there's no reason to create millions of wasted life pairs, now that we can use adult stem cells for anything.

    Darran,
    NAU? What's that?

  • Darran,

Nevermind. Googled it. Conspiracy theory drivel. These types of alliances have existed for centuries. We have a similar relationship with Japan since WWII, are they part of the US? No. Sorry, hogwash.

  • Actually Dru, I thought the same thing, but there is a little more truth to this than you realize.

But you are correct, the stem cell research has done alot of different venues so no need to do alot of embronic stem sell research. Most people are unaware of the other types of stem cell research that mimic embronic stem cells and actually is a way to avoid the ethical aspect of this issue altogether.

  • Conspiracy theories? I don't think so.

    http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,695250146,00.html

Utah legislature just passed resolution to order Congress to abandon their path to such union. Fourteen other states have already passed such legislation and if 2/3 majority of States do this, then Congress will have to abandon their plan for NAU. The SPP leads to the NAU.

Like I said, there is more to this than you think.

  • A company called Advanced Cell Technologies is very close to launching clinical trials. In addition, doctors at the University of Oregon are working closely with another company that has developed new cell lines. They want to move into clinical trials this year. In regards to the ability to create cell lines from our skin, (as reported last November)this is years away. Embryonic stem cell are much closer. We're talking about embryos not fetuses. Furthermore, a large percentage are eventually disposed of.
