  • Has anyone with cone/rod dystrophy used one of these telescopic lenses on glasses with an autofocus? I have no idea if they are available in Australia nor how much they cost? Are they suitable for the classroom?

  • Hi Yvonne,
I simply googled 'ocutech autofocus bioptics Australia' and got a couple of web sites, wich listed the names and addresses of companies in AUstralia which distribute this and similar products. I have never tried one, but I understnad 'free trialling' of low vision aids is quite common.
    Best of luck,

  • Thanks Linda

    PS
Do you have cone/rod or does one of your children?

  • I have found the name of a guy who has the ocutech auto focus telescopes (mounted on glasses). We have an appointment next week with him to see if they work and if my daughter would use them.

  • That's great Yvonne,
I hope your daughter gives it a go, even if she will only use it at home, and not in front of her peers, it will enable her to participate in 'normal' life a little more.
I have Cone Dystrophy, and will not know for some time if my 2 daughters have inherited the condition. My condition is genetically dominant, so there is a 1 in 2 chance that any of my children will inherit the disease. There is no specific test for my form of CD, and so it is a waiting game.....if the cones in the retina degenerate, then we know they have it. The pattern of my particular 'brand' of CD seems to be that significant enough numbers of cones have failed to regenerate by about age 7-10 years, then the vision is effected enough for a rigourous diagnosis to be persued.
It's a crappy condition, but one that at least enables it's 'victims' to function relatively normally in childhood. As the number of cones drops, so too does the vision, and so it progresses over a lifetime, but is usually severe enough by the 20's or early 30's to be regarded as 'legal blindness'.
Best wishes to you and your daughter.
    Regards,
    Linda N.

  • Good luck to you too Linda. We are participating in a study being run by University of Western Australia where they are taking samples of DNA to try and look at whether they can predict more accurately the future of people with retinal dystrophies e.g. progress of disease etc. In our family only the youngest daughter has the problem. My two older girls do not-at least there are no signs. But I do worry if they are carriers. Whilst the study in WA won't lead to giving me details re the genetics, I at least feel we are doing something for those in the future. If you are interested,I could email you the details. I got them from a family in WA.
