  • Hello,
I am new to the boards. I am a 71YO male and was told that I have MD about a year ago; this was from a VA doctor. I have little to no respect or trust in the VA system; but it is all I can afford! I am still able to drive albeit I do not drive very much at all. Just to do my grocery shopping and very few other errands. What I am very concerned about is getting help with this task and other help if this gets worse. I live in Maine and have no family nor friends. I live in a mobile home park where the neighbors keep to themselves. I have queried the internet for help and found very few sites here that offer any. The VA offers none at all. I am really concerned about this especially if the MD worsens. I don't even know if it the wet or dry type! The wonderful VA doctors offer no damn help at all. I assume it is the dry type since I was given eye drops for the dry eye condition. But who knows. My next appoinment is not until the end of April. I am debeating whether or not to go into more debt (credit card) and go to a civilian specialist. Any suggestions?

  • My dad had MD and he had a pair of glasses which had a little telescope like attachment to the right side lens. This enabled him to drive during the day. The glasses were something like $1400.

  • My mother n law was told to take lutien (by prescription)...also eating foods with omega 3 and taking fish oil. You could discuss this with your doctors. She is no longer driving and we take her to her appts. I hope you will be able to be closer to family where they can help you. Someone should be helping you with this. Cant you get medicare or medicaid help? Its possible you could get home health assistance as well if you call one of the hospitals there, they can interview you and at least give you options for your care. Hate to see you go in debt more. Either call the hospital and ask for the social worker and tell her you would like her to come visit you as you have no help, or call social services listed in the phone book. If you leave your phone number I can call you. Wishing you the best.

  • The VA in their infinite or finite wisdom do NOY take Medicare. I have the same problem as a veteran and 67 yr old female. This is what you get for service to an ungrateful nation.

  • Ho///I aso have dry macular degeneration in one eye with wet in the other eye(nothing they can do for the wet now). Medicare pays part of the treatment and if you have a secondary ins. your copay will be very affordable. Go to a retina specialists in your area and forget going to the VA. Also, each state has an aging dept that may offer you help with activities of daily living. Go to Elder Care Locator on the net and put your state in to see what is offered. Good luck!!!
