  • Avastin and Lucentis
  • Posted: 2008-03-03 19:06:16 By Vince M
  • I thought this was interesting. I just returned from my RS who told me the government sponsored head to head Avastin vs. Lucentis had started but results would probably be a couple of years away. He said he prefers Avastin because he thinks it is longer lasting. I am an example. I received my last shot of Avastin in April 2007 and have been stable ever since. I can read, drive, etc.
Has anyone else had similar or different results? With Avastin? Lucentis?

  • HI There! I have had 3 shots of avastin; it has been 4 months almost and I still have annoying air bubbles; they are changing all the time; just getting tired of them swimming around; I did have them break up and crush then they swim around again; however, my surgery was successful with Avastin! I recommend Avastin to anyone; just don't have these air bubbles gone yet. The first time and second time they went away within the day. They gave me more for the 3rd time; I had hemorrhaging around the retina from high blood pressure and everything went well. Barb. Email me anytime; do you have air bubbles or did get air bubbles from Avastin and how long did it take for them to go?

  • I had a total of 6 shots of Avastin over approximately a 1 year period with the last April of '07. I had varying degrees of discomfort from a day of irritated eye (first shot) to nothing. I never had air bubbles.
Are you still getting shots? Have you noticed any changes in your vision? Where does the Doctor say the air comes from? Does he indicate there is an improvement in your eye?
I guess like everyone with this problem I can't get enough information. Appreciate anything you have.

  • Hi Vince: The surgery very much improved my vision; they were able to clear up all of the bleeding and swelling and sealed up everything; still have this annoying bubble; it is a reaction to the avastin; i call them and they said it will break up until there is no bubble left; it crushes and my husband sees them into more bubbles; and then moves around some times. I hope it goes completely; it has gotten very tiny; the swimming is starting to slow up now; so i think they are starting to dry up a little; i noticed a change last night and tonight; and the vision improved 20/20 from the avastin surgery! Good luck to you. Any questions; ask. :)

  • I have had wet AMD since 2002. I first received steroid shots (every 2 months or so)and when Macugen became available, I started with them. But Avastatin then becme available and I was receiveing a shot every 2 months. However, I then switched to Lucentis and after 2 shots (2 month interval), I have not had to have any more for the last 18 months. I never had any problems with any of the shots.

  • HI: Did you get air bubbles from the shots and how long did it take for them to go away? Thanks for your help. Barb

  • I never did have air bubbles with any of the shots I received. When I received steroid injections, I did get tiny balls of the medication but these went away within 3 or 4 days as the fluid was absorbed into my system.. Macugen, Avastatin and Lucentis did not leave any visible droplets. The only problem I had with the injections was the irritation caused by the device holding my eyelids open and this went away in a day.

  • HI Karl; thanks for responding; i got your message; i still have the air bubbles but i am starting off and on to get stabilizing relief; this has been a really rough time; i have been crying alot it swims around sometimes and won't stop but today i started to see some relief; it looks like the fluid may be drying up; my rs said that it will go away in time; he said that the only concern was if the bubble does not start breaking up then it is not going away but when it breaks up swims around it goes away; i can't wait til this process is finished. My husband has been very supportive through this. I just had this one bright wobbler that kept swimming around and flickering; it was awful; today it will be 4 months exactly wow; i am finally getting some slowing up; will keep you posted. Avastin is wonderful for the vision; they caught my situation early before becoming macular degeneration; keep in touch any time; nice to meet you.

  • It may not make any realk difference but my doctor said to sleep with my head above my feet (semi-setting up) for the steroid shots. But I did not have to with the others. The idea was that the medication pooled at the bottom of my eye cavity by gravity and would be absorbed much faster.

  • Hi: Thank you for your advice about sleeping facing up! I have been getting some relief from the bubbles it does slow up from time to time and it looks clearer now; and it does not take off as much; is that a sign that it is absorbing? Slowing up more and clearing? Thanks. This has been rough; makes me dizzy and sick sometimes; i saw a line up of small bubbles for a while; i guess those will go when the swimming stops; i just have a little area of swimming now. I think it is finally starting to slow up; i am relieved. It is crushing all the time; my husband can see the crushed bubbles. But; if it is slowing up is that a good sign that it is drying? Thanks

  • Hi Karl; well it is over 4 months now reaching toward 5; this bubble is really breaking up fast; my rs said not much longer! I am very happy about this; it explodes when i go different places; not sure if it is the temp of the building or what it is but it is finally going fast; i just have to take motion medicine because it really makes me dizzy; just wanted to say hi and hope you are doing well. The nurse explained that it is like a balloon will be going until all gone. It sure takes off; it looks like it is mad and gets rid of the bubbles. Noone wants to go through this but it is almost over. It is really absorbing up fast! Will keep you posted. :) Have a Happy Holiday coming up soon.

    a small cataract.
It was a kick in the pants when I heard the news in November. saw RS in DEC also. and I am to see him in Jan. watching and waiting at the moment.

seems like activity has realy slowed in here.

  • Vince,
It's Mar, do you remember me? I had to change my profile a bit, I lost the old one.It has been awhile since I have been here.
Vince, are you still on here or reading anything from these message boards?
It has been along time since I have been in here.
FFB changed the format, and while it is lovely, it may be difficult for some to figure it out.
I had to do alot of clicking onto different drop boxes to get to this place.
I hope this finds you well, and still with good vision.
    hope to hear from you.
