  • prism glasses

  • Hi I was wondering if anyone is familiar with some form of glasses with prisms that they have come up with to help people with macular degeneration, my dad has the wet version for a few years now and really misses his vision, he would just like to be able to fish and or hunt a little, someone mentioned something about some new glasses but we have not been able to locate any information on this, if anyone knows anything about this we would greatly appreciate the info.

  • There are a few types of prism eyeglasses on the market. The one that I use is called half-prism. They are high strength magnifies (coke bottles) that are useful for tying a fishing line, but wouldn’t work for hunting. By the way, tell your dad to steer clear of treble hooks. I bought my pair at a local low vision store for about $70.

The glasses you might be talking about are called Systems of Sight Low-Vision Eyewear. They are not magnifiers. Instead, these glasses bend the light to other areas of the retina that can still see. They cost $2,950 plus a trip to Orlando. You can also just do the examination for $125-$250 to see if the glasses will work for you. Here is a link to their website.

Or, you might be thinking about the Reynard NuVision™ eyeglasses that use multiple lenses, which magnify and expand the field of view. I’m not sure if they mention prism. They cost $2,100 plus shipping. Reynard NuVision states it has a “100% Satisfaction Guarantee Plan.” Here is their website.

The University of New Mexico, though its MacVision business venture, is developing another type of corrective lens that use a cone shaped prism (either attached or machined) to redirect the light. The idea is similar to the eyeglasses above, but will use off-the-shelf eyeglass frames, and will be available at optical shops. I don’t know when they will be available, or what they will cost. Here is a link to MacVision’s product sheet. (They don’t have a website yet)

I hope this helps. I’m not endorsing any of the eyeglasses.
