- Val H.
You may be referring to iol vip (internocular lens) which I think is a modification of cataract surgery to install a telescopic lens. I can only find that it is being performed in the UK. It is for dry.
Thank you all for bearing with me--this is probably the only good information I've given. - View Full Thread
- Identifying Dry Macular Degeneration Type
- Posted: 2008-04-29 19:19:12 By Lofton F
- My doctor thought I had adult vitelliform macular dystrophy. I took a test, negative. Then he thought it may be Bests disease, negative. Then I took a blood test and sent it of to identify some gene abnormality, it didn't. I went to Arizona to take micro current treatment (which I continue at home),no improvement. I'm taking Eye Max vitamins drinking carrot juice yada yada. I'm 54, male. In the last year my vision has dropped to 20/70 in ine eye and 20/200 in the other. Id there anyone out there who knows of anything to arrest/reverse this condition? I haven't been able to find a retinal specialist who can identify what I have (other than a form of dry md) My fathers brother (deceased) had something similar so it may be genetic. Anyway, thanks in advance to anyone who may reply.

- I forgot to mention that I am currently on a blood thinner - Coumadin and occasionally on high blood pressure medicine - can't remember the name. I did not have any issues with blood clots or high blood pressure before my recent c-section delivery so I am not sure if this has made my MG disease to accerlate. I DO notice that it seems to be getting worse. Also, I forgot to mention in my initial posting that I use to get migrains on the same side as my MG ewye when I was a child - flashing light and a lot of pressure on that side. I still get them from time to time - about two times a year. I wonder if there is a connection somehow. My left eye socket hurts when this happens and so does my ear on the same side - lots of pressure and pain in the ear. Sometimes, I have thought it was an ear infection but it would some times turn out negative upon seeing a dr. Some dr's have prescribe antibiotics even if they did not see an ear infection just in case it would work - some times it did, sometimes not. I will ask my specialist if there is a connection to all of this and let you know. If any of you have ever had these symptoms, it would be great to know as we may be on to something.

- hello folks. well it looks as though there is an antifungal agent out there that when taken PO is helping some one I know, to keep her wet and hard to treat myopic eye dry.
she has been trying to get a RS/researcher to look at this,As she has been taking it for its original purpose, and this was a side benefit.
She has had Intravenous avastin, and intravitreal avastin and Lucentis, none of which kept her dry for very long. this seems to be doing the trick and has had the most benefit.
I do know they are planning , if they have not started useing it, for cancer patients.
the drug is called.

- Macular Degeneration
- Posted: 2008-03-19 09:18:11 By Martha R
- I am 69 years of age. Yesterday, I was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration. Prior to this diagnosis, I had surgery on my left eye for a hole in the macula on September 19, 2007. The surgery went well; after one month, the surgeon was perplexed. He stated the hole in the macula was completely filled in but the symptoms remained. He requested an MRI; nothing appeared as unusal. I then to the Retinist Specialist on January 18, 2008; he said "let's wait a couple of months and see what happens". Yesterday, I started the monthly injections. At this time I do not know the name of the medication he injected, but I will find out today. My driving ability is ccnsidered "legally blind", meaning I am allowed to drive in the daylight, little traffic, and short distances. I am overwhelmed with all of the circumstances and events in getting to this diagnosis. Is there emotional information available on how to handle this disease? The thought of possibly going blind is very frightening. Thanks for listening, MarthaLynne

What do others do when they are living with this disease? Are there any ways to adjust to this problem and be able to resume normal daily activities which require site? - View Full Thread

- I thought this was interesting. I just returned from my RS who told me the government sponsored head to head Avastin vs. Lucentis had started but results would probably be a couple of years away. He said he prefers Avastin because he thinks it is longer lasting. I am an example. I received my last shot of Avastin in April 2007 and have been stable ever since. I can read, drive, etc.
Has anyone else had similar or different results? With Avastin? Lucentis? - View Full Thread

- On 10/10/2007, Mary C responded to Ramy regarding progressive macular degeneration. Mary stated that she found magnifyind eye glasses at
Walmart that she wears over her prescription eye glasses. I could not find tham at my Walmart. In what department did you find them? I found some lenses that you stick onto your prescription glasses in the Pharmacy, but they did not suit my purpose. I asked at the Optical department and they had never heard of such a thing. Maybe, you were shopping at a Super Walmart which we don't have here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. - View Full Thread

- Hi there,
I have also been diagnosed (they aren't real sure of the exact type). There is eye disease in my family--my mom and all her siblings were legally blind. They called it macular degeneration but others called it choricoidism. The docs say I don't have that though. The first time I found out I had retinal changes was 9/11 (go figure) when I was thirty five.

- I am glad I have found this site. My mother is in a state of panic after developing Wet Macular Degeneration in one eye about 6 months ago.
The other eye was rendered blind by Glaucoma a few years ago so she is running out of eyes!
She has had 3 Avistan shots and she says her vision is worse now even though the doc says the blood is nearly all gone from her eye.
Can it make your vision worse? The docs here are a closed society and give almost no REAL info to anyone, especially elderly.
Aslo, is Lucentis the same as Avistan but a with a different trade name? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. - View Full Thread

- Hi
I am a new member, my name is Karen. My Father who turns 75 years young today has macular degeneration in one eye. He is doing fairly well, can still drive during the day, but is losing sight quickly in that eye. I have a question that I hope you all can help me with, I am leaving shortly here to go shopping to buy him a gift, he reads about 5-6 books every two weeks and needs better lighting, I have seen/read that the "full spectrum" lighting is very good for people with vision problems has anyone used this lamp and what are your comments....good idea or bad idea??
Have a blessed day!

- I can see again

- ________________________________________
I currently live in Naples where I was born and raised and I am now 60 years old and was diagnosed with macular degeneration which is a horrible eye disease with no cure. It has devastated my entire life and has robbed me of what I consider the most valuable thing I have (my sight). I could no longer see my childrens face, watch television, read books and drive a car. A few months ago I was was listening to a country station and I heard about a new breakthrough eye vitamin that was developed at the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital at the University of Alabama. I have to admit I was skeptical at first but needless to say I was very desperate and was willing to try anything I could. I called the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital and asked them about what I had heard on the radio and they told me the name of the vitamin was Macular Health. I was told that they just completed a study on this vitamin and it showed a 16% improvement in retina function in just 12 weeks and that it was the first time this had ever been done. So needless to say at this point I was so pumped up I loged on to the companies web site with the help of my daughter which by the way we had to google Macualr Health to find. We then purchased a 3 month supply which ended up costing me $13.33 per month which I felt was very affordable and the best thing was I only had to take 1 pill per day. I received the vitamin in a few days after my daughter placed the order and now 4 months later I can now read the small print in my books and see my families faces so much better. I still cannot drive my car but if my vision continues to improve as it already has I have no doubt god willing I will be driving again soon. I thank god for giving someone the knowledge to come up with such a great product and I am so grateful to get back what vision I have so far. I have numerous friends at a local senior center that I visit weekly with this horrific eye disease and they to are now taking the Macular Health eye vitamin and are also very grateful for me telling them about it. As you can now see I am able to get back on my computer and type so since God was good to me I want to tell others about my troubled life in hopes I can help them if they are living in darkness as I did for so long. - View Full Thread
- Is light Therapy for SAD safe?
- Posted: 2008-01-15 13:41:43 By Sally T
- I have myopic degeneration and have been treated successfully with Avastin. I also suffer from Seasonal Affect Disorder, which last a long time each year here in Minneapolis! From what I've read online, blue light is suspected to cause retinal damage, so I purchased a common light box that uses white fluorescent bulbs. I have used it twice and notice that my eyes feel "sore" for hours after use. Does anyone have information about the safety of using a light box for those of us who already have retinal damage?

- Dear Friends,
The January webcast of the International Macular Degeneration Support Group featured Mary Warren, MS, OTR/L, SCLV, FAOTA, from the Department of Occupational Therapy, University of Alabama at Birmingham. The audio/visual recording of "The Challenges of Multiple Age-Related Disabilities" is now available free to the public on the IMDSG web site at:
http://www.mdsupport.org/nsg.html
This is an important and timely subject for aging seniors who often feel overwhelmed by the seemingly endless number of conditions we face. I highly recommend that you set aside an hour to listen to what Mary Warren has to say.
Over 9,000 retirement centers, libraries, clinics and senior organizations are receiving flyers in the mail this week about these monthly IMDSG presentations. This outreach program is designed to provide information and support at no cost to visually impaired older adults who do not otherwise have access to such resources. I welcome all help in spreading the word and have made a copy of the flyer available for printing and distribution from:
http://www.mdsupport.org/nsg/printflyer.pdf
Please do what you can to see that no one in your community goes without the help we Internet users take for granted.
Thank you!

- Hello to everyone. I was diagnosed with wet macular degeneration in on eye 2 years ago aged 27. My specialist has treated it with PDT. I still have 20/30 vision and need glasses to drive at night. I am lucky because the bleed happened on the outer edge of the macular. I suspect the bleed happened because I had been smoking weed and woke up the next morning with it.
6 months ago i noticed my left eye had a blurry spot right in the middle so I decided that I would try alternative treatments. I started on a raw food diet and also started taking some eye specific vitamins. I am obese and generally mistreated my body. Within 10 days the blurry spot on my left eye had disappered and has not returned. My other eye has increased by one line on the eye chart according to the doc's. I have returned to my previously unhealthy lifestyle and will be restarting tomorrow on a proper raw food diet. I will let you know how i do as I am determined to fix my eyes. - View Full Thread

- my new year's resolution
- Posted: 2008-01-01 18:37:53 By dan r
- Dear Friends,
My personal resolution for the new year is to help cure the fear that comes with AMD. I can't cure the disease, so that's the best I can do. And I've learned that a good way to accomplish it is by giving the weapon of knowledge to everyone who is in the fight. This goes for people who are not only on the Internet, as we are, but to thousands more "unconnected seniors" out there.
Since March 2006, our International MD Support Group (IMDSG) has been reaching more than 2500 people per month in retirement centers, senior centers, libraries and clinics with Internet webcasts featuring leading experts in the field of vision care. Many of you have been listening to the archived sessions, and some of you have even formed affiliate groups as your own personal outreach (thank you!). I hope you have benefited from these programs and that you will continue to "tune in."
In a few weeks, nearly 9000 centers and about 20 CEOs of large retirement community corporations will receive information through the mail about the IMDSG. Hopefully, as a result of this effort, we will add many more affiliates to the 100 or so groups already participating.
I have listed below the presentations scheduled for the coming 12 months. Please talk it up among your friends, acquaintances and doctors, and let them know that this information is available at absolutely no cost. That's how we are fighting AMD until the cure comes along, and your help is greatly appreciated.
For more information about the IMDSG, how you can start a group, and links to all past and current webcasts, see:
http://www.mdsupport.org/nsg.html
Please take a minute to look over our schedule of upcoming programs. Better yet, hang a copy next to your calendar. Knowledge is the best medicine we've got right now, and thanks to financial support by our generous sponsors, LowVision.com and the Macular Degeneration Foundation, it will continue to be absolutely free.
Best wishes for a happy 2008,
