- Intro with myopicMD, cataracts, and possible glaucoma
- Posted: 2013-04-09 11:06:31 By debra p
- Hello all,I am new here.I have had severe myopia my whole life but in 09 had surgery to reattach retina (insert belt), and 2yrs later left eye has vitreous tear and went from my good eye to my worse eye in moments. I feel that drs don't give you the info you need to make life decisions. Since 2009 my vision is getting progressively worse. My drivers license was taken away from me a few months ago (age 50) which I am still getting over. Was told recently that my cataracts cant be removed (too dangerous). I find that every eye dr, specialist, and surgeon says something different (if they say much at all). I find I have to be my own advocate and am educating myself via internet about my eye issues and my future. I am finding that there is no public transportation in place for disabled like me in my area. I need support, and info. I am depressed and scared. I am out of work and am appealing my denial for ssi/ssd. Knowledge is power and without it I feel powerless!

- Macular Degeneration
- Posted: 2011-02-21 13:32:39 By James C
- Hello,
I am new to the boards. I am a 71YO male and was told that I have MD about a year ago; this was from a VA doctor. I have little to no respect or trust in the VA system; but it is all I can afford! I am still able to drive albeit I do not drive very much at all. Just to do my grocery shopping and very few other errands. What I am very concerned about is getting help with this task and other help if this gets worse. I live in Maine and have no family nor friends. I live in a mobile home park where the neighbors keep to themselves. I have queried the internet for help and found very few sites here that offer any. The VA offers none at all. I am really concerned about this especially if the MD worsens. I don't even know if it the wet or dry type! The wonderful VA doctors offer no damn help at all. I assume it is the dry type since I was given eye drops for the dry eye condition. But who knows. My next appoinment is not until the end of April. I am debeating whether or not to go into more debt (credit card) and go to a civilian specialist. Any suggestions?

- Restaurants reviews for the visually impaired, join us on Facebook!!!
- Posted: 2011-01-30 14:49:13 By Alvaro G
-
Hello everyone:
I am Alvaro and I have RP and cataracts and I have posted here several times in the past.
Today I want to tell you that I created a Project called Low Vision Bureau and has a Facebook Page where anyone with low vision from the United States, Canada, the UK and anywhere in the world can come and review a restaurant based in the lighting, service, crowd, etc…
My idea is being supported by many low vision people who have helped me set up the Facebook Pages.
I want to help everyone around the world choose a good place to go eat where they can feel comfortable and well served. We, the low vision community deserve the best like anyone else does so lets make this happen and have the restaurant guide for the blind.
You can add me as a friend on Facebook by entering my email: luckyguy135@hotmail.com
And please become a member of our Facebook Page and review any place anywhere, remember that there are reviews by region and city so choose the area where you live or visited to review it in an ordered fashion.
Facebook Page:
www.facebook.com/lowvisionbureau
Thank you so much for reading this and come on in and join us in this amazing project!!!
Alvaro.

- Posted: 2010-07-07 18:34:13 By Beau G
- Hello to all. I am 31 years old and have been diagnosed with wet amd in my left eye for over a year now. I have had five Avastin injections and one PDT. In a few days I will have my second PDT treatment. My question is, where I have a blind spot, there is almost always a flashing light affect. This occurs if my eye is open or closed. I was wondering if this is normal. My doctor has explained that it is probably were my brain is trying to fill in the blanks.

- I'm 41 and was diagnosed with macular degeneration 6 years ago. My vision is getting worse slowly.
My testosterone and growth hormones tested low and my doctor is considering hormone replacement therapy.
Does anyone know if there is any known issue about taking those hormones for people suffering from MD?
Any suggestion about a reliable source of information?

- Hi,
My father has a form of Inherited Macular Degeneration known as Fundus Flavimaculatus with macular dystrophy (FFM). Fundus Flavimaculatus is similar to the more common form of Macular Degeneration known as Stargardt’s. I was wondering if anyone else has this disorder. I would like to learn more about the latest research and clinical trials, and also share his story. I know he is looking for people in a similar situation that he can connect with.

- Free Yoga Class in Silver Lake
- Posted: 2009-08-21 16:37:49 By Pamela J
- Hello potential yogis,
Greetings. I'm affiliated with an Ashtanga Yoga Studio in Silver Lake run by authorized teacher, James Butkevich (http://www.ashtangayogala.org/). We are planning on offering a free class to those that are interested. It is one way for us to reach out to the local community.
First, a little about the style of yoga that we practice.
Ashtanga is a system of yoga that differs from other styles in that postures are tightly linked with the breath. So, every posture or movement has an inhale or exhale associated with it. The goal is to focus more on the breathing and less the posture. Ultimately with practice, this system of yoga becomes more of a moving meditation. Ashtanga is made up of a set series of postures that build upon eachother. When taught traditionally, a student begins with a few postures and receives additional postures only once proficiency is achieved on the last posture. In a traditional class, students practice at their own pace and level of ability, but in the company of other students and with the encouragement and adjustments from a teacher as needed. This style of practice can also be done at home and can have long-lasting benefits, such as helping with stress, anxiety, mobility and improving quality of life. For these reasons, Ashtanga may be well-suited for students who have individualized needs and for different age groups.
We will probably structure the class and the schedule based on the needs and schedules of those who express interest. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at drishtipath108@gmail.com for more info.
cheers,
Pam

- Congratulations to Scott MacIntyre!
- Posted: 2009-03-05 11:50:46 By Kristine A
- Congratulations to Scott MacIntyre! His dynamic performance on Tuesday night secured him a place in the Top 12 in American Idol!
Thank you to everyone who voted for Scott. Be sure to tune in again next Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. EST and cast your vote for Scott as he performs in the next round. With FFB’s support, Scott MacIntyre is destined to be the next American Idol!
Millions dream of making it to the final rounds of American Idol but for Scott MacIntyre, the dream has become reality. Born with severe vision loss from Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), Scott is an incredibly gifted musical performer who has made it to the Top 12 on American Idol. With his remarkable talent, Scott is bound to make it far in the competition, and we need you to support him as he shoots his way to the top!
An Arizona State University graduate, a Marshall scholar, and a Fulbright scholar, Scott learned to play the piano at the age of three. His piano professor, Walter Cosand, said, "He's always been able to do what everyone else could do and many things no one else could do. A lot of things he does are very remarkable, even for someone without a disability."
Scott also has a sister, Katelyn, who has lost her vision to LCA. With their brother Todd, the three siblings have made a splash performing as the MacIntyre Family Singers. Scott even shared his talents with the FFB family when he performed at the opening luncheon of the 1998 VISIONS Conference in Chicago.
Simon, Paula, Randy and Kara have brought him this far; now it’s up to us to make Scott MacIntyre the next American Idol! Scott will be performing live on Tuesday, March 10, as one of the Top 12 contestants to continue to compete. Voting is free, so be sure to vote for Scott!
Stay tuned to the Foundation Fighting Blindness Web site for more information about Scott’s progress and how your votes can help him reach the top and raise awareness of retinal degenerative diseases across the country.

- I'M NEW TO THIS BOARD
- Posted: 2008-09-27 14:01:03 By Marilyn P
- Hi all, I've was diagnosed with glaucoma 2 1/2 years ago. I've had surgery on the affected eye because the medicated eye drops were not working and I've lost 50% vision due to damaged optic nerve. Now, my eye is acting stange. With or without my glasses my eye seems to have a sensation of wetness plus like something holding back my vision, such as it is. The eye doctor gave me a special test for the MACULA. Said he'd call me if anything bad. Have not heard from him, however, after looking on these various websites I found the Amsler Grid test and the affected eye does have the wavy lines as described. Any thoughts ?

- free presentation on nutrition and AMD
- Posted: 2008-09-12 16:08:58 By Dan R
- Dear Friends,
The September 11 session of the International MD Support Group featured ophthalmologist/author Lylas Mogk, M.D., with an excellent presentation on nutrition and AMD. Her talk, titled "What You See is What You Eat," is now online and free to the public in MD Support's Audio/Visual Library at:
http://www.mdsupport.org/tutorials.html
This is a very comprehensive overview of the entire field of diet and nutrition that brings together all of the current thinking about improved retinal health through the food we eat and the supplements we take. I highly recommend that everyone and their caregivers view Dr. Mogk's presentation. And be prepared to take notes, because it is full of a great deal of important information you will want to remember.
Best regards,
Dan Roberts, Director
