  • Contact Lenses?
  • Posted: 2011-02-18 12:55:25 By Richard D
  • I'm 30 years old and have had Retinoschisis my entire life. I have no central vision in my right eye, but fortunate to have it in my left eye. I had strabismus with my right eye (lazy eye) and had surgery on it 5 years ago. I'm worried that it is drifting back, I dislike wearing glasses and I was wondering if anyone with Retinoschisis wears contacts? My regular doctor has always said to not do it, but my Retina Specialist says it should be ok. Would like to hear other opinions on this...

  • Yes! I'm 26 and was born with retinoshisis also. I'm just like you, I freaking hate glasses, always have but had to wear them until I was around 21 because I assumed that they just wouldn't have contacts for me. All an eye doc will tell you is that without wearing glasses you risk losing the vision you have if something smacked you in the face or whatever and gouges an eye out. My response is, if something smacks me in the face, I definitely don't want to have a piece of glass in front of my eye so give me the contacts. I hope this helps, feel free to send me an e-mail if you've got any questions. (bjdeverell@yahoo.com)
  • Give it a trial

  • Hi Richard,

I can not think of any reason why giving contacts a trial would hurt anything. My best advise is to see a low vision specialist and work with them on a trial. They might be able to give you a trial pair for a week or two to see if you are ok with the lenses.

Sometime contacts can help correct other problems or just give you a full fielf of vision. I find that sometime you have to find a doctor that will work with you. Give it a trial as long as there is no danger.
