Description

The San Diego Chapter of the Foundation Fighting Blindness invites you to an evening that will engage each of your sense of sound, sight, touch, smell and taste through a variety of activities. For years, we have engaged your senses through the dining in the dark experience, but this year, we hope to share the many abilities that people with disabilities have.
This event will feature the following artists:
This event will feature the following artists:
Jon Wellner is best known for his recurring role as toxicologist and DNA specialist Henry Andrews in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, but what you may not know is that Jon has retinitis pigmentosa. Diagnosed in 2001, Jon dealt with this jarring news through humor – in fact, he added it to his comedy stand-up routine. Jon will join us at Appeal to Your Senses as our Emcee and Entertainer for the evening. As a member of the Foundation, Jon is thrilled to be joining us.
Guests will also be entertained by local radio personality Ted “T” Herring, host of Jazz 88.3 FM’s “Every Shade of Blue” program—the longest running blues radio show west of the Mississippi. Now 63, Herring was born with RP and has been legally blind since 1990.
Lex Gillette has proved to the world that there is absolutely nothing that can deter us from realizing our dreams. As a totally blind track and field athlete, Lex has acquired a world record, two Paralympics silver medals, eight American records and twelve national championships. He is also fabulous behind a piano. After going completely blind at the age of 8, Lex took up lessons and is sharing his talents with us at the gala.Ahmet Ustunel was blinded at the age of 3 years old. Early in his studies he discovered that creating things with his hands was what he was most passionate about. New to San Diego, Ahmet found himself at the Grove Gallery at UC San Diego where he creates pottery out of clay and pottery. This artwork you can touch! And, it will be on display for your touching at the event.
