Stephen P. Daiger, Ph.D.

Dr. Stephen P. Daiger is the TS Matney Professor of Environmental and Genetic Sciences in the Human Genetics Center of the School of Public Health at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston; he is a tenured professor in the Division of Epidemiology at this institution; and he is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Medical School, the Univ. of Texas HSC at Houston. As a Professor in a non-profit, Statesupported, university-based medical center he has research, teaching, service and administrative duties relating to medical genetics, molecular biology and public health.

Dr. Daiger received his undergraduate AB degree from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, in 1965 in experimental psychology; and earned his PhD degree from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, in 1975 in human genetics under the supervision of Dr. L. Luca Cavalli-Sforza. He received postdoctoral training in medical genetics at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, from 1975 to 1978 under the supervision of Dr. Arno G. Motulsky. He served in the US Army Medical Field Service Corps, at Ft. Belvoir, VA, as a commissioned officer from 1966 through 1968, and was a Research Assistant Professor in Pediatric Genetics in the Department. of Pediatrics, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, from September 1978 through
September 1981. He has been in his current institution since 1981.

Other recent and relevant responsibilities include: 1.) Acting Chair, Research Conflict of Interest Committee, the Univ. of Texas HSC at Houston, 2009; 2.) Vice Chair and Genetics Committee Chair, Scientific Advisory Board, Foundation Fighting Blindness, 2007-2009; 3.) appointed to the Dr. Thomas Stull Matney Endowed Professorship, 2004; 4.) Faculty President, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the Univ. of Texas HSC at Houston, 2004-2006, and Executive Board Member, 2009; 5.) Member, Intellectual Property Committee, the Univ. of Texas HSC at Houston, 1998-present; 6) Chair, Scholarship and Traineeship Awards Committee, School of Public Health, the Univ. of Texas HSC at Houston, 2001-2009; 7) Member, Advisory Board, Houston Chapter, Foundation Fighting Blindness, 2008-2009.

Dr. Daiger is also a member of the EyeGENE Network, a member of the EyeGENE Steering Committee, and a member of the EyeGENE Data Policy Committee, National Eye Institute, National Institutes of Health. Dr. Daiger’s research interests include identification of genes and mutations causing autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive and X-linked retinitis pigmentosa, and related and cognate diseases, using linkage mapping, DNA sequencing, MLPA, bioinformatics, and other laboratory and computational approaches; and follow up studies on the pathologic mechanisms involved in specific disease-related genes and disease-causing mutations.
