David G. Birch, Ph.D.

Dr. David G. Birch is the Research Director of the Retina Foundation of the Southwest (RFSW) in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Birch joined RFSW in 1982 after obtaining a Ph.D. with Dr. Gerald Jacobs at the University of California, Santa Barbara and completing a fellowship with Dr. Eliot Berson at Harvard University. Dr. Birch is also associated with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where he is currently an adjunct Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Electrophysiology. Dr. Birch has broad interests in retinal physiology in health and disease. His primary focus over the past 25 years has been in retinitis pigmentosa, where he has pioneered novel techniques for assessing retinal function. He has been involved in several studies documenting the natural history of progression of the disease and has conducted some of the groundwork necessary to the current move toward clinical trials. His current focus includes participating in a number of ongoing trials. Along with serving for many years as Regular and ad-hoc member of NEI Study Sections, Dr. Birch is a Scientific Advisory Board member for the Foundation Fighting Blindness. |
