Wendy Weiner, Kansas City, Membership Chair |
My name is Wendy Weiner and I am a volunteer with the Foundation Fighting Blindness Kansas City Chapter. I would like to tell you a little bit about myself and about our local chapter in the hope that we may be of help to you or someone dear to you.
My own journey with retinal disease began when I was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) 11 years ago. My eye doctor told me about FFB when I was diagnosed.
In an effort to learn all about my condition, I became acquainted with the FFB and the work it is doing to find treatments and cures for RP, age-related macular degeneration, Usher syndrome, Stargardt disease and many other retinal degenerative diseases. Although the outlook 11 years ago was not nearly as exciting as it is today, I knew without a doubt that I wanted to become involved in helping FFB help us — to work with them to become part of the solution.
Since then, I have been an active volunteer for FFB and am very happy to tell you that the pace of research was quickly accelerated, bringing us to a new era of human clinical trials!
Keeping you informed about exciting new research like this is just part of our Kansas City Chapter mission. We hold regular chapter meetings that are free to the public. These meetings provide information about the latest research advances, advances in treatments and resources and technology to help maintain a better quality of life. Topics range from recent clinical trials to nutrition, to helping loved ones cope emotionally with their loss of sight, Those who attend these meetings have the rare opportunity to mix and mingle with others who are fighting the same battles and who are committed to the same mission — to find a cure.
I am thrilled to be a part of FFB and welcome you to our family!
Sincerely, Wendy Weiner
