Debi MittmanDear Friends of the Westchester-Fairfield Chapter,

Now, more than ever, the Westchester-Fairfield chapter of the Foundation Fighting Blindness is home to passionate, driven members who have not only spread the word about the Foundation, but have made it their personal mission to find a cure for blindness.  I feel so fortunate to have been able to meet and work with such a motivated group of people.  In its fourth year, our chapter is well underway and has hosted a number of successful chapter meetings and fundraising events.

This past May, my husband Evan co-chaired the first fashion industry fundraising event for FFB. Called Fashion Ball: Dining in the Dark, the event took place at The Ritz-Carlton in Battery Park. The night was filled with inspiring speeches, great food, and a fun-filled after party that got everyone dancing.  The Dining in the Dark portion of the evening was incredibly powerful, and truly allowed the non-visually impaired to experience what it means to lose one's sight. We are looking forward to our second annual Fashion Ball on May 30 at The Plaza in New York City.

Evan and I also attended the Visions Conference in Baltimore.  It was a unique and exciting experience listening to the foremost experts discussing the developments and breakthroughs in retinal research. The event, which was attended by over 600 people, was capped off with a fabulous dinner dance celebrating FFB's 40th year.

Our Fourth Annual Westchester-Fairfield VisionWalk was supported by not only our chapter members, but Mother Nature as well. Unfortunately, due to Mother Nature’s unexpected visit, our VisionWalk had to be cancelled, but that didn’t stop us. Our Walk Chair, Wendy Kreisberg, and Events Manager, Jennie Wexler, were able to pull together a great celebration for the Westchester-Fairfield VisionWalk, especially since we have raised more then $144,000, putting us at 170% over goal! We are already looking forward to next year’s VisionWalk, and our organizing reception on March 25 at Harrison Public Library. We are looking forward to seeing speaker, Dr. Michael Engelbert, M.D., Ph.D., at the reception, a retinal specialist from  Vitreous Retina Macula Consultants of New York.

This last year has been extremely busy and rewarding. Members of the Westchester-Fairfield chapter have all worked together to make a difference in the battle to fight blinding retinal diseases, and we will continue to do so in 2012. A cure is definitely in sight!

Many thanks to all of you,

Debi Mittman
