Richard G. Weleber, M.D., FACMG

Dr. Richard Weleber earned his medical degree from the University of Oregon Medical School and subsequently completed a residency in ophthalmology and two fellowships in Medical Genetics. He is one of only a few physicians in the country board-certified in both ophthalmology and molecular and medical genetics. He is a Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics.

For over 30 years, Dr Weleber has been diagnosing and managing patients with retinitis pigmentosa, inherited retinal and macular dystrophies and other ophthalmic genetic disorders at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Patients routinely travel hundreds of miles to benefit from his expertise. Under Dr. Weleber’s direction, in 1984, OHSU became one of the sites designated as a Research Center for the Study of Retinal Degenerative Diseases by the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Dr. Weleber also serves as the Director of Electrophysiology and Visual Function Service for the Casey Eye Institute, and is internationally recognized for his work in electrophysiological and psychophysical testing. His efforts have led directly to standardization and improvement of the full-field ERG, the multifocal ERG, the EOG, and visual field test procedures vital not only for patient diagnosis, but also for clinical characterization necessary to embark on clinical treatment trials. As a result of Dr. Weleber’s dedication to clinical research and patient care, the Casey Eye Institute was chosen as a participating center for the first phase II clinical treatment trials (CNTF/ECT) for RP. His ongoing research interests include clinical and molecular research for RP and related disorders, including syndromic forms of RP, and the development and validation of endpoints for clinical trials for retinal degenerations.
