Johanna M. Seddon, M.D., ScM is Professor of Ophthalmology at Tufts University School of Medicine and Founding Director of the Ophthalmic Epidemiology and Genetics Service of Tufts Medical Center, New England Eye Center, Boston, MA. She is a renowned practicing ophthalmologist and specializes in evaluation and treatment of patients with macular degeneration. She is recognized world-wide for her innovative and ground breaking research on nutritional factors and their association with AM.D., as well as for her novel discoveries regarding genetic, biologic, and genetic-environmental factors associated with this prevalent disease. She founded and directed the Epidemiology Unit at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary previously, and completed fellowship training in ocular pathology and medical and surgical vitreo-retinal diseases at Harvard Medical School. She was the first ophthalmologist to attend the Harvard School of Public health and obtain a graduate degree in Epidemiology, the study of the occurrence and frequency of diseases and their causes. She was the recipient of the inaugural Dr. Maurice F. Rabb, Jr. Award from Prevent Blindness America in 2005, for her pioneering work and continued dedication to the field of macular degeneration research. She has received the Lew R. Wasserman Merit Award from Research to Prevent Blindness, Special Recognition Award from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and Honor Award from the American Society of Retina Specialists. She was voted Trustee (1992-1997) and Vice-President (1996-1997) of ARVO. She serves on the boards of macula, retina, and other ophthalmologic journals and organizations. She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Foundation Fighting Blindness. Her career has been dedicated to her patients, and to reducing the burden of visual loss due to macular degeneration. |
