Jeremy Nathans, M.D., Ph.D.

Jeremy Nathans is a Professor in the Departments of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Neuroscience, and Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is also an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. He received B.S. degrees in Chemistry and in Life Sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Ph.D. (in Biochemistry) and M.D. degrees from the Stanford University School of Medicine.  After a one-year postdoctoral fellowship at Genentech, he joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 1988.  Dr. Nathans is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.   He is currently a member of the Scientific Advisory Boards for the Foundation Fighting Blindness, the Ruth and Milton Steinbach Fund, and the Division of Ophthalmology at Novartis.  For the past 28 years he has focused on applying molecular biological methods to understanding the development and function of the mammalian retina, and the molecular and cellular basis of human retinal diseases.
