Let’s Get Behind This Senate Bill

The Capitol Building, Washington, DCKudos to Sen. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), who, yesterday, introduced the Accelerate Biomedical Research Act in Congress. It’s a bill that seeks to restore absolutely necessary funding to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that has been cut to the bone because of Congress’ years-long impasse on federal-budget spending. But as Sen. Harkin, chairman of the Senate’s Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and Education, notes in his website post, “biomedical research should not be a partisan issue.”

For those of us fighting to move biomedical research forward—whether it targets cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, juvenile diabetes or retinal conditions—these have been bittersweet times. Nonprofits, like the Foundation Fighting Blindness, and pharmaceutical companies are committing more money than ever to an increasing number of promising treatments. But developing those treatments—bringing them from the lab to patients—is an extremely expensive process that requires the government’s participation as well, especially in the early stages, before corporate investments are forthcoming.

Mary Woolley is president and CEO of Research!America, a nonprofit education and advocacy alliance with which FFB has partnered in the past. In her weekly message, she points out that, by 2021, Sen. Harkin’s bill would restore “NIH purchasing power without cutting into funding for other national priorities.”

This is something we can all get behind. And the best way to do that, as a supporter of the Foundation, is to send a message to Congress via our Summer Challenge to End Blindness. On this page (or by hitting the button below), you’ll find it’s an easy action to take—an action which advocates for those whose lives will be vastly improved by treatments awaiting the investments they deserve.
