I work for FFB, as its director of gift planning, but I also actually have a retinal disease – something called retinitis pigmentosa, or RP. Although I was diagnosed at age 5, I didn’t discover I had RP till I was 18, partly because my parents didn’t want the disease to hold me back in any way.
And, in fact, it didn’t. I played varsity football and baseball in high school, then went off to college and law school and have been practicing law ever since. I’ve also been happily married, to my beautiful wife, Pam, for about 30 years and have two wonderful, full-grown daughters.
But all this time, I’ve been progressively losing my vision.
To help kick of my blogging efforts at the VISIONS 2012 conference, here are some more details, on video, from my story:
- John Corneille

Steve is highly respected for his expertise and tireless commitment to finding treatments and cures for vision-robbing retinal diseases.
As the Foundation's senior science writer, Ben writes science and research articles for the Foundation’s website, newsletters and Eye on the Cure blog.
As the Foundation's senior writer, Rich writes and edits content for all of the Foundation’s print and online publications, including its blog, Eye on the Cure.
Thanks for sharing John, I look forward to the other videos you will be posting from the conference!
Thank you very much for reading, John will be posting again before the end of the weekend.
Thank you for sharing! I also live with RP and can relate to everything you’ve said!
Thank you very much, and please look for other upcoming posts on living with a retinal degenerative disease.
Thanks John. You give me hope that RP can mean doors opening, not closing.
Thank you for your support Lynn!
John, you had mentioned in your Visions video a place in Chicago that you went to for cane and computer training. I am interested in similar training. Could you provide additional information on this, and other similar facilities?
Regards,
Hi Roy, thanks for posting. We’ll ask John to email you directly about your question. I will send your comment and email off to him. Thanks again
